Live music, wildlife displays and activities for the whole family will headline Australia Day celebrations at the Serpentine Jarrahdale Community Recreation Centre on January 26.
All residents are invited to the free event, which begins at 7.30am with a cooked breakfast served by the Rotary Club of Byford & Districts, Lions Club of Serpentine Jarrahdale and the Byford Scout Group.
At 9am, the Shire will welcome its newest Australians with a citizenship ceremony in the air-conditioned Kingia Function Room. The ceremony will begin with a traditional Welcome to Country address and be followed by a free morning tea from 10am, with the event coming to a close at 11am.
Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said Australia Day was an opportunity to celebrate those values that bind the community together.
“Australia truly is the lucky country and, while I may be slightly biased, I think living within Serpentine Jarrahdale makes us even luckier,” Cr Rich said.
“The day is special one for the entire community because it allows us to celebrate our shared values and recognise the things that connect us all as Australians.
“On behalf of the Shire, I would like to extend an invitation to all residents to come and celebrate Australia Day with their friends, family and neighbours at the Serpentine Jarrahdale Community Recreation Centre.”
Entertainment will be provided by the Heritage Country Choir and Bandicoots Band, while members of Byford Tae Kwon Do and Dance Aspire will showcase their talents. A climbing wall, indoor and outdoor bouncy castles, face painting, balloon artistry and giant board games will keep children entertained.
The day will feature a visit from Ranger Red and his Australian wildlife display, which includes a dingo, tawny frogmouth, blue tongue and bobtail lizards, turtles, northern green tree frogs and pythons.
