The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale congratulates Andrew Hastie MP on his re-election to the Federal seat of Canning at Saturday’s election.

Shire President Michelle Rich said the Council looked forward to continuing working collaboratively with Mr Hastie and the re-elected Coalition Government on delivering the $505 million Tonkin Highway extension.

The project received bipartisan support during the election campaign by both major parties for $404 million in Federal funding.

The State Government has committed the remaining $101 million in its 2019-20 State Budget.

“Now that the election is over, we are keen to get to work on progressing the Tonkin Highway extension from Thomas Road in Byford to South Western Highway in Mundijong,” Cr Rich said.

“This project is critical to the growth of our region, to improve road safety and to provide strategic linkages within the Shire and the wider Peel region.”

Cr Rich said the Shire would continue to seek support for the extension to include grade separations at Thomas, Orton, Bishop and Mundijong roads as well as at South Western Highway.

“With our population expected to grow to more than 100,000 people by 2050, it is critical that the delivery of the Tonkin Highway extension includes grade separations at these intersections so it can support the future growth of our community,” Cr Rich said.

The Council will also engage with the Coalition Government on other critical projects, which the Shire has identified to meet the needs of its growing and changing community.

“As the fastest growing local government in WA, it’s imperative that we effectively plan and deliver infrastructure and community projects and initiatives,” Cr Rich said.

“We look forward engaging with all Federal Ministers, MPs and Senators in the coming months about our strategic projects, including the Keirnan Park Recreation Precinct, the new Byford train station, Hypergrowth Network Implementation plan, realigning the freight link, Nature Splash Park and our Trails Centre.”
