New program proves a hit with budding bookworms

A new program designed to foster a love of reading at an early age will return to the Mundijong Public Library in time for the new school term.

Library Book Heroes is a unique initiative which tasks Year 5 students with special reading ‘missions’, helping promote a passion for reading and a love of books.

Participants who successfully complete a given mission are rewarded with stamps for a top-secret passport. Five stamps earns readers a library bag and special certificate.

Library staff will promote the program in classrooms across the Shire when the new school year begins next month.

Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said Library Book Heroes had been well received since its introduction in Term 4 2018.

“This is one of a number of really important initiatives hosted by the Mundijong Public Library which encourages children to develop a passion and love for reading,” Cr Rich said.

“Research tells us that children who begin reading at a young age develop a greater general knowledge, are able to expand their vocabularies faster and often have improved concentration spans.

“The real difference with Library Book Heroes is that it makes reading fun and introduces incentives to keep children motivated. We think it’s a fantastic initiative and would encourage children to get down the library and discover how fun reading can be.”

Library Book Heroes runs alongside the Book Bugs’ Club for Year 1 students, and Bookworm Club for Year 3 students. To be involved, students must be members of the Mundijong Public Library.

Meanwhile, library staff have been kept busy this summer with a number of school holiday activities focused around STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics).

Participants last week made creations like ‘fizzing fireworks’ and cornflour slime as part of a special ‘Oobleck’ science demonstration.
