The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale has completed Stage 1b of a major upgrade to the Byford Skate Park following the relocation of a shaded park bench and landscaping work.
It follows the recent installation of lighting and perimeter fencing at the popular local youth precinct, allowing the park to be used for longer periods and enhancing security.
The shire received a $50,000 contribution from the Peel Development Commission towards Stage 1b, and employed three local contractors during construction.
Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said further upgrades were planned as part of Stage 2, which would see the park and wider Byford Youth Precinct expanded to accommodate more users and different activities.
“The number of residents under working age is expected to grow by 60 per cent in less than eight years, which emphasises the immediate need for public areas where young people can socialise,” Cr Rich said.
“The Byford Youth Precinct, which incorporates the Byford Skate Park, is already an extremely popular location for local skaters, BMX riders and scooter riders. The precinct is obviously a focal point for young people, but it also holds tremendous social importance for the wider community.
“The shire is focussed on helping young people be active, engaged, and connected within their community by providing access to sport and recreation facilities.”
Stage 2 funding is a key objective in the Shire’s revised Advocacy Strategy, which lobbies for contributions towards important local infrastructure projects. It is expected to include a skate park expansion, construction of three-on-three basketball courts, parkour elements, and further shade and landscaping.
